The peaceful Laos becomes a new destination in the world travel map. This small landlocked nation is slowly opening its doors and offering the intrepid traveller a warm welcome. You visit Vientiane and drive via Vang Vieng towards Luang Prabang. This delightful town captivates you with various interesting sights. Off the temples you enjoy a four day trek in the mountain region around Luang Prabang and see many tribal groups.
DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival - Vientiane
On arrival at Wattay Airport, you are met by our guide and transferred to our centrally located hotel. The charming and fascinating capital of Laos, Vientiane is a small city conjuring up exotic images, with the curious mix of Lao, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, French influences. We start our half day city tour with Wat Sisaket, the oldest temple still standing in Vientiane. This amazing structure features remarkable frescoes and Buddha statues. Close to this masterwork is the former royal temple of Haw Pha Kaew which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image. Afterwards we continue driving to Patouxai. This imposing monument standing in Lane Xang Avenue, is well known as Vientiane's own Arc de Triomphe and provides a stunning views of the city. We round off our day with a visit to the great sacred masterpiece and symbol of Laos, That Luang Stupa. O/N in Vientiane.
Day 2: Vientiane - Vang Vieng
The bustling central market in the heart of Vientiane, sells a wide away of local treasures. We stroll around this famous trading center before we head out to visit the giant Friendship Bridge and the impressive Buddha Park. This landmark represents a blend of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures created by mystical monk on a parkland located by the Mekong River. By early afternoon we depart for Vang Vieng. This small and tranquil village is famous for the beautiful scenery and becomes a new destination for anyone seeking the eco tourism or peaceful place to relax during days off. We follow the road No 13 with stopover at the fishery village of Ban Mo and some roadside markets. On arrival in Vang Vieng we enjoy a short walk to get our first hand orientation. O/N in Vang Vieng. Day 3: Vang Vieng - Lung Prabang
Heading out of town we enjoy a boat trip along the Namsong River, giving us a taste of adventure and an interesting visit to Tham Jang Cave. This sacred cavern was once used by local people as a hideout from Chinese invaders. We walk uphill to see Tham Jang Cave and enjoy wonderful views across the idyllic valley to the beautiful panorama of Vang Vieng Town. We embark on a walk to the Tham None Cave and cross the river to Ban Huai Ngai, a very pleasant village where we can explore the different local lifestyle. We depart Vang Vieng for Luang Prabang. The road conditions are very poor ; however the stunning mountain scenery makes the hardship all worthwhile. On arrival in Luang Prabang we check in hotel and stroll around to catch our first glimpse of this charming town. O/N in Luang Prabang. (B)
Day 4: Luang Prabang
The exploration of this delightful town includes the magnificent Wat Xieng Thong, which is overlooking the Mekong River. The temple structures are decorated in various ways with gilded stuccoes , doorways and marvellous tree life mosaic pattern on an outer wall, representing the ancient temple architecture of Luang Prabang. We follow it with the national museum. This interesting mansion displays a lovely collection of treasures and artifacts reflecting the richness of Lao culture dating from the days of the early kings right through the last sovereign. There are also plenty to see in this town, some of which are the impressive stupa of Wat Visoun, the Srilankalese styled temple of That Marko, the shrine of Wat Aham and the five tiered roof Wat Mai. We round off our day with a walk up to Phousi Hill for a beautiful panorama view from the town center and the mighty Mekong River. There are 329 steps leading us on zigzag way past various temples to the sacred, gilded stupa of Wat Phousi at the summit. O/N at Luang Prabang. (B)
Day 5: Luang Prabang - Ban Klung - Trekking
The extremely beautiful mountain areas around Luang Prabang Town are ideal for anyone seeking a true adventure and trekking expedition. Today we cross the Mekong River and visit one of the famous caves in Luang Prabang. Afterwards we begin our walk to the pottery village of Ban Chane and Ban Pha Phet . They are inhabited by the Khmu people who are the major population in locality. We follow the footpath to the pier and embark a boat for a leisurely trip to Paklung where we are the guest of a Lao family. The accommodation is very simple and dormitory style, no western facilities. O/N at Ban Paklung. (B,L,D)
Day 6: Ban Klung - Khouang Si Waterfall - Trekking
Upon leaving the village of our previous night we set off on a full day trekking to venture into the homeland of different tribal groups. The local tracks pass some sleepy hamlets from Ban Jong to Ban Long Phu. We are sure to attract attention of villagers because this part of the country receives very few visitors. On arrival at Ban Saluen, we again cross the Mekong River and continue walking to Khouangsi Fall. This is a pleasant stop to relax in marvellous setting of waterfall and lush forest. The waterfall tumbles over multi tiered limestone formations into the cool and clear pools ideal for anyone seeking an enjoyable escape when the heat becomes unbearable. O/N at Ban Long Phu. (B,L,D)
Day 7: Ban Long Phu - Ban Long Lao Trekking
The exciting expeditions continue as we walk to a new village, past the verdant and rugged mountain landscape. The trek usually takes around 6 hours and is quite steep in places; however some physical preparation will enable you to maximize enjoyment from the walk. By mid afternoon we reach Ban Long Lao, home of the Lao Loum people. We have time for a stroll around the village to understand a little more about their interesting culture and simple lifestyle. They are friendly and welcoming. Tonight we will be toasted as honored guests of a Lao Loum family and will be sample some of their homemade rice wine! O/N at Ban Long Lao. (B,L,D)
Day 8: Ban Long Lao Trekking - Luang Prabang
Today we spend a half day walking in this beautiful mountainous region and have a chance to see many mountaineers going about their daily business such as logging, herding buffalo, tilling the field. At the small village of Ban Xieng Mouak we meet up with a local transport, Tu Tuc and drive for few hours back to Luang Prabang. The remainder of day will be free for your own exploration of the town to catch up on many shopping areas or simply relaxation. A farewell dinner at one of Luang Prabang's famous eating spots is a perfect way to celebrate your achievement in completing the trek. O/N in Luang Prabang. (B,L,D)
Day 9: Luang Prabang - Departure
There is free time for your own exploration of the town and strolling around the shopping areas. The trip ends after your transfer to Luang Prabang Airport for departure. (B)
